With
SpamAssassin (SA), it's important to note that there are server wide settings
and there are settings for individual mailboxes.
Server wide settings
are simple enough to get to. Log in using the plesk interface and from the
navigation column, select server and then select the spamassassin icon. If you
wish to enable server wide settings, check the box for server wide settings.
Let's talk about the hits required number - also known as the
sensitivity or threshold. SpamAssassin works by assigning a point value for
each characteristic an email message has that's indicative of spam (for example
Viagra, or "make $$$ from home", etc.). When a particular message's spam value
reaches the threshold number then it is marked as spam.
The default
value of 7 is very high. It is recommended that server wide settings be enabled
and the required number to lowered to a value of 3 or 4.
Now let's talk
about individual mailbox SA (SpamAssassin) settings. We will use mailuser@some_domain.com to
show you how to do this.
From the navigation menu, select domains, then
select the domain you wish to work with (in this example, it's
some_domain.com). Then select the mail icon under services. Then click on the
mailbox you wish to modify.
From there select the mailbox icon under
tools. On the next screen place a check in the box next to Enable spam
filtering and save the settings.
This will enable the Spam filter icon
and the SA on/off link.
Now select the spam filter icon. This will take you
to a screen to configure threshold number as well as other features (remember
the default value of 7 is very high - a value 3 or 4 is recommended).
Last, but not least, SA needs to be trained. Select the training icon.
This will take you to a screen that allows you to see the headers of
messages in this mailbox. Ones that you recognise as obviously being spam, you
should check the select box and then click the link for "It's spam."
