Low cost "dedicated server, unlimited bandwidth" offers are rarely what they seem. Broken promises and frustrated customers are rife within the hosting industry. That’s because it is both physically and financially impossible to offer unlimited bandwidth at a fixed low price!
The reasons behind the frustration
All dedicated servers use ISP upstream pipes to connect to the internet. Server network cards typically run at 100Mbps through these pipes, and consume up to 32 TB/month. These speeds require ISPs to run two OC-192 (10Gbps) lines for every 100 servers, which is neither cheap nor simple.
The speeds and expense involved mean that ISP’s can’t allow up to 32 TB/month per server without charging for it, which would definitely not be a “low cost” offer. This means many ISPs are actually capping traffic, or oversubscribing the network to let servers compete for limited bandwidth.
How to avoid the pitfalls
- Look at the fine print of the contract,
- Investigate the ISP's infrastructure,
- Learn how much bandwidth you will really get
Look for reputable providers that offer unmetered traffic at given port speeds, or that bundle a lot of bandwidth with their servers, at reasonable prices.
We don’t just offer bandwidth. We offer what your business needs
ServerBeach servers feature 1-2.5 TB bandwidth and 100% network uptime SLA. Metered and unmetered 10/100/1000 Mbps port speeds are available. Data centres maintain large multi-homed pipes to the Internet, and each is connected to our fast and reliable SuperNetwork.
